MLB PLAYER PROP BETS - FRIDAY'S PROPS

Our MLB Player Prop Bets are available for Friday, May 3 and for today's slate, we're focusing on the below matchups:

For the above matchups, our experts have selected MLB Player Prop Bets on the below individuals:

  • Cardinals P Sonny Gray
  • Athletics 1B Tyler Nevin
Sonny Gray Over 5.5 Strikeouts (-115)

Gray had a slow ramp-up to the season due to a Spring Training hamstring injury. He made his 2024 season debut on April 9th, recording 5 strikeouts in 5 innings against the Phillies despite throwing only 64 pitches. He has gone over 5.5 strikeouts in each of the 3 starts since his debut, and he owns an elite 36% strikeout rate for the season.

No, I don't think Gray (at age 34) is suddenly an elite strikeout pitcher, as he posted a strikeout rate barely above league average over the last two seasons. But, the underlying metrics are hard to ignore. His swinging-strike rate sits at a healthy 13.7% through 5 starts, and his CSW% is an elite 32.7%.

He gets a matchup against the horrendous White Sox, who own the worst wRC+ (74) in the league and have struck out at the 11th-highest rate (23.8%) this season.

Even with a little regression in the underlying metrics, Gray should go over 5.5 strikeouts.

Tyler Nevin Over 1.5 Total Bases (+145)

Was surprised to see these odds so high, as Nevin profiles as one of my favorite hitters of the night against the lefty Ryan Weathers. Nevin comes into this one red-hot, racking up 4 multi-hit games in a row, including 4 long balls, over his last 7 games, and he has covered this number in 6 of his last 9 games. He has been great against LHP this season, piling up a .463 wOBA and a massive .370 ISO. On the other side, Weathers has had major issues solving righties, coughing up a .391 wOBA on 48.6% hard contact, and he has struck out righties at only a 16% clip.

What Are MLB Prop Bets?

MLB props are wagers that can be placed on individual players or events that occur during a baseball game. These bets are typically more specific than traditional bets on the outcome of the game, such as the moneyline, over-under or run-line wagers.

Some common MLB prop bets include:

  • Player Props: These bets focus on individual players' performance, such as how many hits a batter will have, how many strikeouts a pitcher will record, or how many stolen bases a baserunner will attempt.
  • Game & Team Props: These bets focus on specific events that could happen during a game, such as which team will score first, how many total runs will be scored, or whether there will be a home run in the first inning.

Prop bets can be a fun and exciting way to add some variety to your MLB betting. They can also be a good way to target specific players or teams that you have an edge on.

Here is an example of a MLB prop bet:

Will Aaron Judge hit a home run in today's game against the Astros?

This bet is a yes/no proposition, and the odds will depend on how likely the sportsbook thinks it is that Judge will hit a home run. If you think Judge is likely to go deep, you would bet "yes" and collect your winnings if he does hit a home run. If you think he is unlikely to hit a home run, you would bet "no" and collect your winnings if he does not hit a home run.

Prop bets can be a fun and profitable way to enjoy MLB betting. By understanding the different types of prop bets that are available, you can find bets that you are confident in and that fit your betting style.

Bankroll Management

In the space of gambling and sports betting as a whole, bankroll management is a controversial topic. NFL props are easy to get carried away with, so keep in mind you should always bet within your means and set aside money you are comfortable losing.
